February Updates
Can you believe that January is already past? I feel as if I have pulled off a lot in the past month, but at the same time I haven’t checked off any of the action items towards completing some of my biggest goals. The HGC board met in its new configuration on January 13 to start planning out the year. Board meetings and general meetings have been scheduled until the end of 2025, and we are working on creating interesting and informative programming for general meetings. In addition, our annual supply swap (January general meeting) was a great success. Judging by the reactions of the members in attendance, everyone picked up some treasures to add to their collections. The Main Line Art Center in Haverford gratefully received supplies and equipment that were not claimed by HGC members.
Our next general meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 19, at 7 p.m. (This meeting will on ZOOM only; there will not be an in-person component.) Wendy Merron will lead us in self-reflection and a guided meditation to help overcome artist’s block brought on by the winter doldrums. Having worked with Wendy before, I can confidently say, you definitely want to save this date! Look for Zoom information later in this newsletter.
It has been a tumultuous start to the year. I think it’s safe to say that many people are experiencing anxiety from events bombarding us from various corners. My personal anxiety tends to peak during the holidays, but it has yet to recede after the new year. In times like these, I try hard to remember not to be too hard on myself and that the best way we can support each other is to be there for each other and encourage each other. As a classically trained singer, I have crossed paths over the years with more than a few high-profile musicians who have shared nuggets of wisdom and their takes on world events. I would like to close with a quote from Leonard Bernstein that I have modified to suit our situation as artists: “This will be our response to trying times: to make art more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” The world needs more beauty, and we are uniquely qualified to provide it. Share your beauty, more intensely, more devotedly, more elegantly than ever before.
Peace,
Brian Middleton, President
